Structural Integration Therapy

Structural Integration Therapy

Developed by Everett Ogawa of Chicago, IL, Integral Bodywork® is a form of Structural Integration Therapy. Structural Integration is a generic term for the work developed by Ida P. Rolf during the 1970's. Integral Bodywork® draws upon the influences not only of Ida Rolf (her ideas on the primacy of connective tissue and a ten session sequence), but also of Moshe Feldenkrais, Lauren Barry, and William "Dub" Leigh (their ideas of movement through awareness, structure, and energy).

The primary focus of this modality is the body's connective tissue or fascia. As connective tissue envelops the entire body in a seamless, web-like fashion, connecting one disparate part to another, it can at certain places become stuck or "glued down" through trauma or incorrect body mechanics, restricting movement or "flow" through the entire body. Integral Bodywork® works the major fascial planes that run through the body, seeking to restore and reopen the fascia using a variety of superficial and deep myofascial techniques. It does this in a sequence of 10 sessions spaced out according to your individual means, needs, and goals. The prime directive of this reopening and repositioning of the body's fascia is the opening of the body's core -- the seat of our deepest emotional and energetic blocks. Ultimately, the core is opened to provide more expansion and depth...this is usually experienced on a mental and spiritual level, as well as physical. The end result is a body that works better with gravity (as opposed to against gravity), allowing grace and flow in movement, which is closer to our natural state.
